Why are superfoods Good For me?

by Jane McQuigan

Superfoods are glorious gifts of nature that comprise every
nutrient the body demands for unsurpassed health. Superfoods
are also an outstanding way to make up for dietary
deficiencies.

Superfoods help to fortify blood, nourish our vital organs
and regenerate and rebuild damaged cells. Certain
superfoods have the power to detox our entire body.

While a rich diverseness of whole foods similar to many
green leaf veges should be the pillar of any sound diet,
scientific research proves that it is oftentimes tough for
almost all of us to eat adequate quantities of these foods
on a typical basis.

Alas, with today's fast paced work hard life-style, many
people oftentimes acquire nutritional deficiencies, which
can also be induced by diet because the intake of vital
nutrients is severely lacking. If you can incorporate just
one or two of these superfoods in your diet, daily, they can
literally improve your life. Many people discover vigour
levels are massively elevated, brain function is stronger
and overall health and welfare is greatly improved.

The umpteen health gains of superfoods which include
chlorella are undeniable and these superfoods are also
valuable at preventing a number of diseases and therefore
should form the basis of any disease prevention programme.

Superfoods are really powerful and are abundant with
important nutrients and enzymes needed for optimum health
and wellbeing and are far more than just "supplements".
Superfoods rightfully are Natures gifts to us.

For the best results we would invariably recommend eating
these superfoods at least 4-6 weeks although nearly all
people will begin to discover differences in vitality
levels, appetite etc within a few days to a week although
this does depend entirely upon the person, general diet,
life-style and health product.

Superfoods are also an excellent way to make up for dietary
inadequacies. So having spirulina capsules for example would
assist those deficient in B vitamins. Remember, superfoods
are living foods and will provide the body with lacking or
inadequate mineral vitamins and other crucial nutrients. Oh
and did I forget to mention that superfoods like
(http://www.thesuperfoodco.co.uk/) chlorella powder are also
flavorsome and make very delectable, wholesome low fat
snacks!

Dont forget to visit our site for details information on
numerous superfoods which include

How to Read Food Labels

Current info about labels is not always the easiest thing to locate. Fortunately, this report includes the latest labels info available.

You cannot measure every morsel that passes your lips, but it is a good idea to measure most foods and beverages until you get a feel for portion sizes.

It is a supersized world out there, and most people are surprised to find that their idea of a single serving is actually two or three.

If you are into bells and whistles, there are food scales that are preprogrammed with nutritional information, as well as scales that will keep a running total of your daily food and nutrient intake for you. The only tools you really need, however, are a simple and inexpensive gram scale, dry and liquid measuring cups, and idea on reading food labels.

Among all of the mentioned tools, reading food labels seem to be the most effective way of determining the right kind of food to be bought in the supermarket. It lets you make sensible food selections. Through the “Nutrition Facts” section in a particular item in the grocery, you can
identify the amount of serving sizes provided in that product.

With food labels, you can clearly understand the amount and kinds of nutrients that are provided in the item. Usually, it contains the information on saturated fat, sodium, total fat, fiber, and cholesterol amount “per serving.”

However, understanding and reading these food labels can be very perplexing. A typical consumer would definitely ask what those numbers mean and how it will affect her diet intake if ever she will religiously follow the serving guide as stipulated on the food label.

To further have a clear and more comprehensive understanding of the items stated in the food label, here is a list of things that you need to know:

1. Serving size

This is the primary item you will see in a food label.

The amount of servings stated in the food label refers to the quantity of food people usually consume. However, this does not necessarily mean that it reflects your very own amount of food intake.

Moreover, serving size determines the amount of nutrients that enters the body. This means that

The more authentic information about labels you know, the more likely people are to consider you a labels expert. Read on for even more labels facts that you can share.

if you will follow strictly what the serving size is, you will obtain the same amount of nutrients according to the serving size that was given in the label.

For instance, if the serving size says one serving size is equal to 54 grams, that would mean you have to measure 54 grams and eat that and you have just eaten one serving. So to speak, the amount of nutrients stated in the food label is the same amount that has entered your body considering the fact that you have just eaten 54 grams.

However, if you have eaten everything, and the food label says that each pack is equivalent to 4 servings, you have to calculate the amount of nutrients that have entered your body. This means that if the food label says 250 calories per serving that means you have to multiply it to four to get the total amount of calories you have taken.

2. Nutrients

This refers to the list of available nutrients in a particular item. It is also where the nutritional claims of the product based on the recommended daily dietary allowance are stated. Usually, the nutritional amounts are based on both the 2,500-calorie diets and the 2,000 recommended dietary allowances.

In order to understand the numeric value of each item, you should know that the “% daily value”

that the food label indicates is actually based on how a particular food corresponds to the recommended daily dietary allowance for a 2,000 calorie.

If in the event that you have purchased an item that has a dietary allowance different from the 2,000-calorie diet, you just have to divide the stipulated amount by 2,000 and you will be able to identify the “%daily value” for the nutrients.

3. Ingredients

This refers to the list of the ingredients that were used to manufacture the product. The listing is usually arranged from the main ingredients that have the greater amount by weight up to the smallest quantity. This simply means that the actual quantity of the food includes the biggest
quantity of the main ingredient or the first item and the minimum amount of the very last ingredient.

4. Label claim

This refers to the kinds of nutritional claims of a particular food item. For instance, if an item says it is sodium-free, it has less than 5 milligrams per serving or a low fat item actually contains 3 grams of fat or less.

Indeed, reading food labels can be very tedious and confusing. Nevertheless, once you get the hang of it, it would be easier for you to watch your diet because you can already control the amount of food that you take.

Hopefully the sections above have contributed to your understanding of labels. Share your new understanding about labels with others. They'll thank you for it.

Lowering Cholesterol through Smart Food Choices

Have you ever wondered what exactly is up with cholesterol? This informative report can give you an insight into everything you've ever wanted to know about cholesterol.

Come let us go and fly a fighter jet! Well, do you think it to be possible unless you know how to fly and learn all about the fighter jets? Absolutely not! Similar is the case when you ask about the smart food choices which can lower the cholesterol level, it is essential to know what cholesterol is!

Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced by our liver. This substance is necessary for our body because of the following reasons:
Making vitamin D Making some hormones Building cell walls Creating bile salt that helps in digestion of fats Danger Ahead: May be this is not the bill board that you see when you enter the shop selling greasy burgers, cheese items and foodstuff which have cholesterol! This is what your body and mind must be thinking that you cannot realize out of the temptation! So what are the dangers that you cannot figure out? Lets us have a look:

“When high level of cholesterol gets accumulated in the body, it gets deposited on the artery walls in the form of a hard substance. This hard substance is known as PLAQUE. This plaque makes the arteries narrow over time and blood flow decreases. This causes the arteries to harden. This affects the blood vessels which supply blood to the muscles of the heart. The end result can be a heart attack and we will gather to pray: ‘may your soul rest in peace’!

If you find yourself confused by what you've read to this point, don't despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

the heart; it can also affect the blood flow to the brain (causing stroke), kidneys and intestines”.

Danger Ahead is explained!

Way out: Control your temptation!

It is simple! Your body, rather our body can produce enough cholesterol each day so that we can do away with food containing cholesterol. Thus the way out is the magic of ‘LOWERING CHOLESTEROL THROUGH SMART FOOD CHOICES.’ Let us have a look into that.

Of the two variants of fiber (soluble and insoluble), the soluble variant is capable of lowering the cholesterol level. Eating 5-10 grams of soluble fiber every day will decrease the LDL (i.e. bad) cholesterol by 5%-10%.

Soy Protein has lower cholesterol level than the animal protein (milk, meet, egg etc). Replacing the animal protein with the Soy Protein can help in reducing the cholesterol level. For example, have Soy milk or Soy products which can be substitutes of meat. Nuts, especially almonds when used in replacement of the snacks having saturated fats can help to reduce cholesterol. The nuts have healthy fats which are not very harmful to the body. They also have various nutrients which can be helpful for you!

Certain variety of fish like the shellfish has omega-3 fatty acids which are capable of reducing fat in the blood stream. Consumption of these fish can help to reduce the cholesterol level. But, consumption of these fishes should be avoided by pregnant women because they have higher levels of mercury which may be harmful during pregnancy.

You are smart… make your choices smart…!

If you've picked some pointers about cholesterol that you can put into action, then by all means, do so. You won't really be able to gain any benefits from your new knowledge if you don't use it.

Have You Had Beans Lately?

by Susanne M.

Now is the perfect time to give beans and other legumes
another try. They are convenient, inexpensive and provide
your body with plenty of protein. If you're not yet tempted
to put a pot of beans on the stove, keep reading for some
good reasons why cooking with beans, dry peas, and lentils
is a good idea.

They Are Cheap

Here's my favorite reason to cook with beans... it is really
inexpensive to do. I can buy enough beans to cook three
meals for my family for under two dollars. I like to buy
beans at my local costco or a mexican supermarket by the
way. They are usually quite a bit cheaper and I get a larger
variety than what my regular grocery store has to offer.

You really don't need to fix meat for every dinner. Try
replacing one or two meals that you would traditionally
serve meat with hearty bean dishes instead. Some ideas are
to add cooked beans to pasta sauces instead of ground beef
and to make a big pot of chili or bean soup. Of course it's
OK to add a little meat for flavoring. I like to add some
leftover ham to my bean soups and stews for example. Using
less meat each week will save you quite a bit at the grocery
store.

Reason 2 - It's Healthy

One of the big health benefits from eating beans is the fact
that the soluble fiber in them helps the body remove a
certain kind of cholesterol - the one that's bad for your
heart from your body. I guess that's where the old saying
"Beans Beans Good For Your Heart" comes from.

If you are diabetic, you definitely want to make beans a
regular feature on your meal plan since they have shown to
increase the insulin receptor sites in your body. But that's
not the only reason beans are a health super food. These
little legumes have even been shown to prevent cancer.

Reason 3 - It's Yummy

You can make all kinds of different dishes with beans since
they lend themselves to different flavors. You can make
spicy chili dishes or mild beans and rice. Then there's
beans soups that taste almost sweet, smoky black beans with
cumin and exotic dahl dishes made with middle eastern
spices. Add some lentils or beans to your pasta sauce
sometime for a yummy dish that's also good for your waist
line.

My favorite thing to do with leftover beans, lentils or
chick peas is to turn them into a dip. Since they are
already cooked, I just add them along with a little bit of
liquid and some seasonings to my food processor and process
until I have a creamy smooth dip. Serve alongside some
veggies, bread or chips. Even my kids love these dips and I
feel much better giving this to my family than some other
fat-laden dip.

Reason 4 - It's Fast and Simple

Let me explain why I think beans are quick and easy. Yes,
you do have to cook some of them for quite some time (don't
bother with the pre-soaking by the way. They will cook just
fine without), but the good thing is that you don't have to
hang around. Just let them simmer at the back of your stove.
You can also cook them in your slow cooker. I like to start
mine in the morning on low. By dinner time they are nice and
tender and ready to eat.

What makes beans super convenient for me is that I can cook
them in large batches and then freeze them. If I use them
within the next couple of days, I just put them in the
fridge of course. Everything else is frozen for later use.
You don't even have to thaw them, just heat and serve those
beans or use them in your dishes.

If you're not a big bean fan yet, I hope this article has
given you enough reasons to give these versatile veggies
another try. Pick a couple of recipes and try them this
week. I'm sure you'll find a new dish you and your family
will really like.

Two hardy and filling bean dishes are this

sausage and bean skillet and of course everybody's favorite

chili.

Help Save the Planet - Shop Organic!

by Keith Woolley

Leftover food, chipped bark, garden compost, leaf moulds and
manure should be mixed together using a compost heap and
spread throughout your garden so you are not solely relying
on sunlight and water to make the crops grow. Manure is sold
in stores so you don't have to scoop this from the toilet so
don't feel queasy, also chickens are great to have - just
let them roam around in the garden. Some people use dead
animals or meat products but you can't put these in the
soil. Leave them in the bin for a fortnight and maggots will
soon appear which is what you use to help fertilize your
garden.

The earthworm is another helpful creature because it digs
deep into the ground and aerates the soil bringing various
minerals to the surface which also provides better drainage.
The casting this long pink colored creature leaves behind is
five times as rich in nitrogen phosphorous and potassium,
according to experts. Any gardening store or garden center
will have this available for you to purchase.

Organic gardening is a challenge because pests such as army
worms, crickets, gypsy moth caterpillars, slugs and squash
bugs are unwanted guests. The best weapon in an organic
setting is the toad which, despite the fact that at one time
people used fertilizer to kill them, is known to eat almost
every type of insect. Caterpillars and spiders are not in
the toad's diet so if they are lurking in the garden you
should get a bird.

As long as you set the ideal environment for them, you don't
have to buy a toad or a bird from the pet store because they
may come in to your home. If you can put up a bird house or
a small pond, within days, you will have some new occupants
protecting your garden. Insect killers such as the preying
mantis and the ladybug, mark their territory and eat
anything that dares enter their domain so they will do the
job.

For example, the rosemary, sage or thyme is an effective
deterrent against butterflies whereas marigolds are
effective against nematodes. The rotation of crops is seen
as the best way to keep the soil fertile, despite all the
flowers and creatures that nature has to offer. Change the
kind of vegetable for this season with a different one and,
after this one is harvested, return to the first one. you
just have to be practice it so you can harvest the
vegetables you have planted weeks ago.

Foods rich in quercetin include apples, black & green tea,
onions, raspberries, red wine, red grapes, citrus fruits,
broccoli & other leafy green vegetables, and cherries.
Quercetin can also be found in honey and sap, including the

type from eucalyptus and tea tree flowers.

Get To Know The Secrets Of Healthy Food And Live Healthy!

by Tim Sullivan

Health is the central concern in the society where we live.
Living a healthy life is the thing where people are
concentrating more. If you want to improve your health and
stay healthy then the best thing you can do is start having
healthy foods. Healthy foods refer to the food that is
prepared in a quite different way and not the tasteless and
boring food that is widely available as a natural food coop.

Healthy food as well as healthy eating habits is pleasant
for the palate. Closer the food is to its natural state; the
healthier it is for you. You can improve your eating habits
by cutting down on packaged food. This kind of food,
although convenient, is filled with preservatives and
artificial ingredients. Healthy food can be convenient too,
once you get into the habit of preparing them.

Preparing and having healthy food is very easy and
inexpensive. For example: grill some lean hamburger patties
until they are well cooked. Once this is done, place the
patties on whole grain all natural hamburger buns. The
burgers can be supplied with a tossed salad as well as a
side of steamed green beans. Follow it up by serving fresh
fruit for dessert. This entire meal can be prepared within
half an hour and includes a variety of healthy food.

A lean meat, fish or chicken won't take much time to get
them grilled. A salad of greens and vegetables can be tossed
up by the time the meat gets cooked. The frozen and fresh
vegetables can be a supplement to your meal. If you want to
bring in a variety into your meal you can start using the
healthy foods that you have never experienced. The
production section of the local grocery is the place where
variety of fresh vegetables are stored, so always visit the
production section and know the recipes on how to cook the
vegetables with which you have not at all used in the past.
This is the best way to bring in healthy foods in your
children's life. Add new flavors to your meal by
experimenting with fresh herbs and vegetables.

If you cook healthy food on a daily basis then you can
prepare healthy nutritious meals faster. Try also using
these healthy foods in the exotic recipes that you prepare.
These healthy foods can be prepared in advance and store it
for later use. When the frozen food is prepared by yourself
then, you need not worry about the artificial additives or
preservatives.

Encourage your children to get involved in the preparation
of healthy foods. This will create time for you so that can
share with them. Eating healthy food does not cost you much
of your time or money and most certainly, it is a better
option for you.

Just Say No: Healthy Eating and Peer Pressure

If you are on a diet or simply enjoying a healthy lifestyle, than you probably know that peer pressure to eat foods that are not good for you is a major part of your life. If you are worried about the food that goes into your mouth, don’t worry—there are ways to overcome peer pressure. It simply takes a little know-how to get people off your back!

Parties are a major source of peer pressure, especially with alcohol. However, remember that alcohol contains hundreds of empties calories in just one drink. When you go to a part, people might be pressuring you to have a drink and relax, and it can be difficult to say no when they are constantly trying to convince you. Instead, offer to drive to a bar instead. This way, you re the designated driver, so people won’t want you to drink and, in fact, they will probably be purchasing you waters and maybe even helping to pay for your gas. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

Another time when you may feel pressured to eat is at work when the boss orders lunch for everyone at a meeting or when you have to visit a client. Instead of giving in to temptation, simply politely decline the food by letting your boss know in advance or order a meal that is healthy and split the portion in half so you have a meal for tomorrow’s lunch as well.

Baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, and other special events can also wreak havoc on your diet, even if you are good at resisting temptation on your own. When someone hands you a piece of cake and won’t take no for an answer, it can be difficult to know what to say! Here, little white lies might be appropriate. For instance, saying that your stomach was upset earlier in the day will convince a person that you don’t want to eat at the moment or pretending to have a chocolate allergy will get people to allow you to enjoy the party without a hassle surrounding food.

Remember, however, that while refusing bad foods is fine, you should be eating good foods. If you do not, dangerous eating habits and disorders can develop, which will give you, your friends, and your doctor a real reason to worry. It’s ok to say no to peer pressure, but don’t say no to food in general!

How to Start Healthy Eating

If you currently do not eat a healthy diet, it can be difficult to start such a plan. However, healthy eating is important for maintaining bodily function and living a disease-free life. If you struggle with healthy eating, than you know that breaking unhealthy habits can be the most difficult part of the process. However, if you truly want to live the best lifestyle possible, it is important to follow tips in order to start eating a more healthy diet.

A good beginning step when you want to start eating more healthily is to rid you home of all founds that do not into healthy categories. Keep junk foods and beverages out of your house so that you will not be tempted to snack during the day. If you’re worried about getting hungry, keep healthy snacks like carrot sticks, yogurt, fresh fruit, or whole-wheat crackers on hand. If you find that you just cannot bear to toss out the sweets, try keeping something tiny on hand, like chocolate chips. Eating a few of these won’t ruin your diet but also will give you that little sugary fix you rave.

Another great step to healthy eating when you are first starting the process is to take a few moments to learn about what foods are the healthiest for you and how they work in the body. Most people understand that fruits, vegetables, and low-fat means and dairy products are good for you, but few people understand why. The key is learning about nutrients. When you understand how specific nutrients work in the body, you will be more likely to make these healthy choices for your body. Knowledge really is power!

When cleansing yourself to prepare for a new healthy diet, you should also take into consideration your schedule for meals. If you often eat in a rushed hurry at odd times of day, you probably are not getting the best foods possible. Plan ahead! Instead of grabbing a fast food lunch on the go, take a bagged lunch to work, complete with a healthy wrap and some fresh vegetables. Plan ahead for healthy meals in the evening as well by cooking ahead if you are not currently getting healthy dinners and have little time to cook when you get home every night.

Start with baby steps. Even if you only replace one soda a day with a glass of water, you are really improve your calorie intake. If you eat fast food every day for lunch, try replacing that even half of the time. When you start by taking small steps, it does not seem like you are cutting out all of the foods you love and you can take your time to learn about healthy foods which you can love equally as well.

A Healthy Diet while Traveling

A Healthy Diet while Traveling

Sticking to a healthy diet while traveling can be one of the most difficult things to do in your life. However, if you learn how to make smart choices, a healthy diet is really not that difficult. This is probably not the best time in which to start a healthy diet, but if you are currently making healthy choices in your foods already, modifying your diet slightly to accommodate travel is not as it first may seem.

If you are traveling my airplane, a healthy diet may have to include airplane food, which can often be poor for your healthy, depending on the selection. When you book your flight, ask about your food options ask if a vegetarian dish is available. Vegatarian dishes are sometimes more nutritional in this case, but it really depends on what they will be serving. If you can, eat a larger meal before your flight so that you don’t have to eat the entire meal that is served to feel full.

When driving or taking a bus, you may be tempted to stop at fast food restaurants and eat the foods found there. Avoid this whenever possible! If you’re on vacation, you may wish to splurge a tiny bit, but having fast food more than one during a week can really be bad for your health. If you must, choose the healthiest options available, like chicken breasts and diet soda.

Also, remember that you can take your own food when traveling. Carrying a loaf of whole-wheat bread or pita wraps, some lean lunchmeat, and low-fat cheese in a cooler is a great way to avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol junk food meals. These are much better choices and you’ll save a lot of money as well. Call ahead to ask if there will be a refrigerator in your hotel room.

Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out. If you choose salads or pasta get the dressing on the side and ask about low-carb options. Remember too that portion is everything. Order off of the lunch menu whenever you can, and ask for a diggie bag right away. Split your meal in half from the start so that you are not tempted to eat the entire thing, which is usually enough for two or three portions.

At the end of your meal, stick over the desert menu, just like you did with the appetizers. Again, you can share a single desert with the entire table if you feel compelled to order something, or split your portion in half.
